Hot Springs, Ark. - The Missouri Southern baseball team picked up their third win in the Dugan Invitational on Saturday, defeating the Arkansas-Monticello Weevils 10-6. The Lions used big second and fifth innings to stay undefeated this season.
Nate Mieszkowski led off the second inning with a double to left, and advanced to third on a
Will Doherty single. After a walk loaded the bases,
Drew Townsend put the Lions ahead with a single to left center.
Wyatt Morgan drew a bases loaded walk to score another, then
Henry Kusiak drove in a pair to make it 4-0 MSSU.Â
The Lions had a clean third inning, but UAM plated a pair in the fourth inning. Missouri Southern responded in their half of the fourth, getting those runs back. Three straight walks opened the inning, and a fielder's choice scored one of the runs. The other was scored on another bases loaded walk.Â
The Weevils used a big fifth inning to even the score at 6, but the Lions wasted no time getting the lead back. In their half of the fifth,
Chayton Beck kicked things off with a walk, then
Drew Townsend launched a home run to right. Later in the inning,
Nate Mieszkowski picked up an RBI on a ground out, making it 9-6.
Garrett Rice picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice later in the game, scoring the 10th and final run. Solid pitching and defense closed out the game for a 10-6 final score.Â
Three Lions recorded multi-hit performances,
Drew Townsend,
Henry Kusiak, and
Will Doherty. Townsend led the team with 3 RBI and Kusiak finished with 2 RBI.
Wyatt Morgan officially went 1-1 at the plate, but recorded 5 walks which ties the program's single game record.Â
Jacob Davis was credited with the win, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings. He surrendered just 3 hits, striking out 6 in the process.Â
The team will close out their portion of the Dugan Invitational on Sunday with a contest at 1:00pm against Ouachita Baptist.Â
