Warrensburg, Mo. – The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team faced Henderson State University on the final day of the Central Bank Crossover Tournament. A slight lead turned into a marginal victory for the Lions with a huge fourth quarter on both ends of the court.
Missouri Southern (1-3) vs. Henderson State (0-2)
Quarter 1: Missouri Southern 16 | Henderson State 12
Both teams traded baskets to begin the game as the Lions had multiple players score a basket through the first five minutes. The Lions began to develop a lead off a jumper from
Ryan Franklin that led to a layup from
Morgan Meyers and a
Kennady Roach three pointer, giving the Lions a 16-10 advantage with one minute remaining in the first quarter. A layup in the closing seconds from the Reddies ended the quarter in a four point lead for the Lions.
Quarter 2: Missouri Southern 37 | Henderson State 26
Morgan Meyers and
Makenna Yokley were the first two to score in the second quarter, growing the Lions lead to eight. After a pair of free throws from the Reddies,
Kennady Roach would connect with her second three pointer of the game, following a free throw from
Veonce Powell to create a 4-0 run that gave the Lions their first double-digit lead of the season. Both teams traded a pair of baskets until the Lions would find themselves on another run off a layup from
Ryan Franklin and
Kennady Roach and a pair of
Kaitlin Hunnicutt free throws, growing their lead to 15 with 2:19 remaining in the first half. The Reddies slightly outscored the Lions to end the second quarter as the Lions held a 11 point advantage.
Quarter 3: Missouri Southern 53 | Henderson State 42
Kaitlin Hunnicutt opened the second half with a pair of layups to grow the Lions lead back to 15 points. After the Reddies would slim their deficit to nine,
Kennady Roach,
Makenna Yokley and
Mackenzie Hart would each add an unanswered layup to bring the lead back to 15 once again with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Reddies would once again end the quarter on a slight scoring advantage to keep the game within reach.
Quarter 4: Missouri Southern 75 | Henderson State 47
The Lions put together their best quarter of the season on both ends in the fourth, only allowing five points defensively. Offensively, the Lions shared the ball well and scored 21 points and had four assists.
Kennady Roach and
Veonce Powell were key contributors in the fourth quarter as they both would end the game with career-highs in scoring.
Ryan Franklin posted her first double-double of the season as she added 13 rebounds, tying her career-high, to 12 points.
