Lions Defeat the Patriots in the Closing Minutes of Back-and-Forth Game

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Men's Basketball team hosted the Mission University Patriots in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, November 26. The Lions fought back from an early deficit and took the victory of the Patriots in the closing minutes of a tight game, 90-85.

Half 1: Missouri Southern 43 | Mission 44

After the Patriots began the game with a 9-2 lead, Tyrique Brooks knocked down a jumper that would spark a 14-5 run for the Lions to take a 16-14 lead with 12:51 remaining in the first half. The Lions would follow a Patriots' three-pointer with a Jaden Taylor jumper and an Isaiah Atwater free throw. The Patriots would reclaim the lead with an 8-0 run to take a 22-17 advantage with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. 
 
Both teams traded baskets over the following five minutes until Brooks (jumper), Justin Duff (And-1 layup and free throw), and Tyrone Wright (dunk) combined for a 7-0 run to tie the game at 37-37 with 1:36 remaining. It was a battle to halftime, but the Patriots would head into the locker room with a 44-43 lead.
 
Half 2: Missouri Southern 90 | Mission 85
Both teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of the second half, but Lawson Beem of the Patriots would hit two consecutive threes to grow the Patriots lead to 57-49 with 14:02 remaining in the game. The Lions would answer with three three-pointers of their own, two from Tyrique Brooks and one from Justin Duff, and took their first lead since 12:38 in the first half (58-57). After the Patriots regained a two-point lead, Prince Agbaeze (two layups) and Brooks (three-pointer) would combine for a 7-0 run to put the Lions up 67-62 with 10:02 remaining in the game.
 
The Patriots would find another answer, tying the game at 76-76 with 4:12 remaining. Martin Macenis led the way with four points of an 11-4 run to grow the Lions lead to 87-82 with 44 seconds remaining. The Lions held firm and came out with the 90-85 victory.
