Fort Smith, Ark. – The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball traveled to Fort Smith, Ark. to compete on day one of the Hampton Inn Classic against the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats. The Lions would outscore the Bearcats in three of the four quarters to take the victory, 73-62.
Missouri Southern (3-3) vs. Southwest Baptist (0-2)
Quarter 1: Missouri Southern 18 | Southwest Baptist 14
Both teams traded baskets through the first six minutes of the ball game as the Bearcats would lead the Lions 13-9 with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt would return with a three pointer that would spark a 9-0 run as
Veonce Powell would knock down two consecutive threes to give the Lions a 18-13 lead with 1:48 remaining. Only a Bearcat free throw would be scored in the remaining time as the Lions would lead the Bearcats at the end of the first quarter, 18-14.
Quarter 2: Missouri Southern 35 | Southwest Baptist 27
Makenna Yokley and
Reese Webb would open the second quarter with one layup each, but the Bearcats would quickly respond with a 9-3 run to narrow their deficit to two points halfway through the quarter (25-23).
Kaitlin Hunnicutt would lead the way through the remainder of the quarter, scoring seven of the Lions' 10 points to grow the lead to 35-27 at halftime.
Quarter 3: Missouri Southern 53 | Southwest Baptist 46
The third quarter began with another back-and-forth battle through the first five minutes, but
Ryan Franklin would then take over for the Lions as she led the scoring side of a 7-0 run to give the Lions a 13 point lead (50-37). The Bearcats would end the half on a 9-3 scoring advantage as the Lions would lead 53-46 with 10 minutes until the final buzzer.
Quarter 4: Missouri Southern 73 | Southwest Baptist 62
The Bearcats would narrow their deficit quickly to begin the final quarter, giving the Lions a 56-54 lead with 8:22 remaining in the game. The Lions then took over and shut down any opportunity of a comeback with a 10-0 run off two layups from
Reese Webb, and a three pointer each from
Kaitlin Hunnicutt and
Kennady Roach. As the final buzzer would sound, the Lions would claim the victory on day one of Hampton Inn Classic over the Bearcats.
