Volleyball Edged by Washburn in Five-Set Thriller

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern women's volleyball team hosted the Washburn University Ichabods.  The Lions were defeated by the Ichabods, 3-2. Moving to an overall record of 3-16 and 1-7 in the MIAA.
 
Game 1: Missouri Southern (3-16,1-7) vs. Washburn (14-4,5-3)
Set 1: Missouri Southern 25 | Washburn 15

Alana Moesch would take the match's first point with a kill from Mataiya Barber. Both teams would trade points. A block by Amelia Neels and Josey Goldberg would start a Loins 8-4-point rally (12-8); Fernanda Merancio, Kyra Thomas, and Addysen Alvis would also contribute. Alvis would kill and push a Missouri Southern run to add to their lead with an 8-0 point jump from Landrey VanOverschelde's service. Goldberg would end the set with a kill to take set one.
 
Set 2: Missouri Southern 19 | Washburn 25
Both teams came out and traded points. Missouri Southern would work in a lead of 9-5, with points from Kyra Thomas (kill), Addysen Alvis (kill), Amelia Neels (two kills), Landrey VanOverschelde (ace),  Alana Moesch (kill), and Fernanda Merancio (kill). Washburn would respond for a 5-1 rally to even the score, 10-10. Later in the set, the Ichabods would have a seven-point jump to extend their lead (18-14) and hold it to take the second set.
 
Set 3: Missouri Southern 20 | Washburn 25
The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging points. Missouri Southern took control with a six-point jump (13-10); Fernanda Merancio (kills), Kyra Thomas (block and kill), and Josey Goldberg (block) contributed. Late in the set, the Ichabods rallied to take the lead and the set.
 
Set 4: Missouri Southern 25 | Washburn 20
Washburn led early with a 6-3 score. Missouri Southern retaliated with a six-point rally, started from a Fernanda Merancio kill, followed by Amelia Neels and Alana Moesch with their own kills. Within the rally, the Lions had Neels (three blocks), Josey Goldberg (two blocks), and Moesch (one block) contribute critical blocks (9-7). The Lions held their advantage and took the fourth set, sending the match to its fifth set.
 
Set 5: Missouri Southern 8 | Washburn 15
Both teams opened competitively, trading the lead. Missouri Southern would have points from Kyra Thomas (two kills), Fernanda Merancio (kill), Kyla Randall (ace), Landrey VanOverschelde (ace), Amelia Neels (kill), and Alana Moesch (kill). Washburn would find a five-point jump (11-7) and would hold the lead to take the match.
