Volleyball Roars Past Newman in Straight Sets

Wichita, Kan. – The Missouri Southern women's volleyball team travelled to take on the Newman University Jets.  The Lions defeated the Jets, 3-0. Moving to an overall record of 3-14 and 1-5 in the MIAA.
 
Game 1: Missouri Southern (3-14,1-5) vs. Newman (3-17,0-6)
Set 1: Missouri Southern 29 | Newman 27

The Jets took the first lead of the match with a 6-2 score. A kill by Anny Montano, set by Landrey VanOverschelde, broke the run. Amelia Neels pushed the Lions to a four-point surge, to tie the match at 7-7 with a kill. Later in the set, Fernanda Merancio initiated a six-point run for Missouri Southern, with contributions from three blocks by Neels, two from Merancio, a block by Montano, and an ace from Kyla Randall.
 
Missouri Southern continued to control the pace, with two aces from Sydney Unruh during her service. The Lions secured the set with three final kills by Merancio, VanOverschelde, and Neels.
 
Set 2: Missouri Southern 25 | Newman 17
Both teams traded points early, but Newman gained the first large lead with a six-point run (11-10). Missouri Southern responded with a five-point run, fueled by Anny Montano (ace), Amelia Neels (block and kill), and Fernanda Merancio (block). Merancio sparked a five-point rally to reclaim the lead, while Alana Moesch and Kyra Thomas closed the set with back-to-back kills.
 
Set 3: Missouri Southern 29 | Newman 27
Both teams continued to exchange points, keeping the match close. Missouri Southern saw contributions from Kyra Thomas, Amelia Neels, Alana Moesch, Anny Montano, Landrey VanOverschelde, and Fernanda Merancio, each delivering key kills. The Lions posted a .340 hitting percentage with 21 kills on 50 attacks, taking the final set 29-27.
