Five Lions Win Events, Men Claim First, Women Finish Third

Topeka, Kan. - The Missouri Southern track & field teams sent a large group to compete at the Washburn Rust Buster on Saturday. Five Lions won their event and 14 NCAA qualifying marks were recorded. In the team scores, the men placed first with 72 points and the women finished third with 60 points. Both sides featured 22 teams competing in the meet. 

The teams will compete next at the Pittsburg State Invitational, taking place on Saturday, January 27 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.   

60m Hurdles
  • JaDarius Pigg won the event with a time of 8.14 and Malachi Pipkin finished just behind him at 4th place with a time of 8.17, both NCAA qualifying marks.
  • Ashyiria Savage finished the race with an NCAA qualifying time of 8.79, good for third place. That time was her personal best and ranks 7th in the MSSU top-10 list. Claire Cole finished in 16th with a time of 9.97.

  • Miguel Solano ran the race in 1:56.85, earning him 10th place overall. 

Mile Run
3,000m Run
  • Kyla Weems finished in 7th place, finishing the race in 10:35.63. Hailey Nelson finished 33rd with a time of 11:19.19. Zoe Nelson took 35th with a time of 11:21.93.

High Jump
Long Jump
  • Jon Watts took 4th place with an NCAA qualifying jump of 7.21m. Peyton McBride finished 9th with a distance of 7.00m, and Devin Greene jumped a distance of 6.45m for 19th place.
  • Gabrielle McPherson took 2nd in the event with a personal best jump of 5.56m, ranking 7th in the MSSU top-10 list. Lillian Hart placed 24th with a distance of 4.86m, Claire Cole took 31st with a jump of 4.75m, and Sidney Batten jumped a distance of 4.66m for 38th place. 

Pole Vault
  • Holly Robinson and Katie Candrl went back-to-back at 3rd and 4th after clearing an NCAA qualifying mark of 3.80m. Robinson did it on her first attempt, Candrl on her second attempt. Mackenzie Moring placed 6th after clearing 3.60m and Abby Hobbs took 11th after jumping 3.45m. Alyssa Jerome and Emma Hobbs tied for 22nd after clearing the 3.05m mark on their first attempts. 
  • Travis Greenfield and Bastien Franck went back-to-back at 1st and 2nd. Greenfield won the event with a new personal best of 4.86m which was good enough for an NCAA Qualifying Mark. Franck finished 2nd with an NCAA Qualifying Mark of 4.76m.

Shot Put
  • Cedric Pearson was the runner-up, throwing an NCAA qualifying mark of 17.35m. 
  • Briar Gillum finished in 2nd place, throwing an NCAA qualifying mark of 14.06m.

Triple Jump
  • Taris Jackson won the event with an NCAA qualifying distance of 15.39m. This is Jackson's new personal best and ranks 4th in the MSSU top-10. Peyton McBride finished 5th with a distance of 14.29m.
  • Lillian Hart took 6th in the event with a jump of 10.49m.

Weight Throw
  • Mallory Huber won the event with an NCAA qualifying toss of 18.98m, currently third best in all of NCAA Division II. Briar Gillum also threw an NCAA qualifying distance, placing 4th with a personal best of 17.03m. Aubrey Skinner placed 39th with a throw of 11.95m.
  • Peyton Barton won the event with an NCAA qualifying toss of 21.85m, currently first in all of NCAA Division II.
