Joplin, Mo. - The Lions were back at home Friday for the first time since their opening tournament when they hosted the Southern Invite. Hosting the #13 Washburn Ichabods, the visitors took the match 3-1 to drop MSSU to 8-4 (1-2 MIAA).
Despite winning the two opening points of the match, the Lions fell 25-11 in the first set. The second set featured back and forth runs by the teams, but Washburn claimed it 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead. Down 18-16 in the third set, the Lions had a five point streak to take the lead, eventually holding on for the 26-24 victory. The Ichabods made a push toward the end of the fourth set, winning it 25-17 and the match 3-1.
Fernanda Canedo had a 16-16 double-double, featuring kills and digs.
Jaryn Benning also had an 11-11 double-double, kills and digs as well.
Kyra Thomas finished with an attack percentage of .500, claiming 9 kills in the match. Leading the match with 33 assists was
Hannah Allick, also recording 14 digs for a double-double.
Southern will play at home again tomorrow (Saturday) evening, taking on the Emporia State Hornets at 7:00 PM.
