Joplin, Mo. - The 17th ranked Missouri Southern baseball program finished a three game sweep over Newman on Sunday Apr. 16th at Warren Turner Field with a 16-12 victory.
The Lions (33-10, 21-6 MIAA) were led by
Garrett Rice going 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBIs and drew two walks,
Drew Davis led the team with five RBIs going 3-for-5 and
Nate Mieszkowski drew two walks and collected three RBIs.
Owen Schneider picked up his second win of the season with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief with
Steen Lane,
Grant Harris and
Laif Hultine each recording at least one strikeout today. Hultine picked up his fourth save of the season and eighth of his career pitching the last 1.1 innings of the game striking out three.
Southern was ready to blast off in the first inning jumping out to a 4-0 lead following a Miller RBI single, Rice RBI double and Davis two RBI double in the inning. Newman (19-24, 11-16 MIAA) scored three runs in the second inning and added three more in the top of the third to take a 6-4 lead.Â
In the bottom of the third inning the Lions scored four runs from RBI singles by Rice and Davis, a
Chayton Beck sacrifice fly and Mieszkowski getting credited with an RBI to make it an 8-6 Lions lead. Southern added two more runs in the fourth inning from a Mieszkowski single up the middle before a four run fifth gave the Lions a 14-6 lead.Â
Newman scored runs in the sixth seventh and eighth innings making it a two run game before
Henry Kusiak hit his 11th home run of the season a two run homer over the left field fencing to make it a 16-12 final score.
