No. 17 Lions Claim Series Against Newman

Joplin, Mo. - The 17th ranked Missouri Southern baseball program claimed its eighth MIAA series of the season on Saturday Apr. 15th from Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (32-10, 20-6 MIAA) began the weekend with a 14-4 run rule win over Newman (19-23, 11-15 MIAA) on Friday Apr. 14th at Joe Becker Stadium. In the first game of the series Southern was led by Matt Miller going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, five RBIs and a home run. Henry Kusiak and Ethan Clark finished with three RBIs and Nate Mieszkowski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. On the mound Cole Woods picked up his eighth win of the season with 11 strikeouts in six innings, Kyle Kaempf came in to pitch the final inning and struck out two batters. 

In game one the Jets started fast with a three run first inning but a nine run bottom half of the inning highlighted by a Miller grand slam. Mieszkowski tripled home Miller and Drew Davis to give the Lions an 11-3 lead. Southern would score again in the fifth inning and scored twice in the sixth to cruise to a 14-4 run rule victory.

In game two the Lions were led by Ethan Clark going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and scored twice. Miller and Henry Kusiak had two RBIs with Mieszkowski and Treghan Parker scoring three runs. Kyle Moore picked up his sixth win of the season with four innings pitching in relief and struck out two, Cole Gayman, Cale McCallister and Laif Hultine recording strikeouts.

Newman got out to another fast start scoring four runs in the first inning with the Lions responding with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead as Clark and Miller hit home runs. The Lions scored three more runs in the second inning off a Parker double down the left field line and a Clark single to right field before scoring one a passed ball and wild pitch in the third to take a 10-4 lead. 

In the fifth inning Southern scored two more runs and in the seventh scored four more runs to ground the Jets 16-12.

The Lions and Newman will play at 1:00pm from Warren Turner Field on Sunday Apr. 16th to finish the weekend series.
