Mayville, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball program came away victorious 14-11 in game two of the three game series against Northwest Missouri from Bearcat Baseball Field on Saturday, the win marks back-to-back series wins against MIAA competition to begin the conference slate.
Southern (13-5, 4-1 MIAA) was led by
Henry Kusiak with four RBIs,
Will Doherty,
Drew Davis and
Garrett Rice had two RBIs. Doherty went 4-for-5 and Rice went 3-for-5 with both scoring two runs.
Cole Gayman picked up his third win of the season with 3.0 innings in releif with three strikeouts as
Laif Hultine notched his first save of the season with a shutout ninth inning and one strikeout.
Northwest Missouri (2-14, 0-5 MIAA) was led by Quinn Mason with five RBIs as he would pick up the loss with 1.0 innings of relief turning into seven runs.
Ethan Clark got the scoring started in the second inning with a single up the middle scoring
Treghan Parker and in the third inning a Kusiak RBI double to right center scored
Chayton Beck. The Bearcats got a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning that wouldn't last for long as a Rice home run to left field tied it up 3-3 in the fifth.Â
The sixth inning proved vital as seven Lions scored to make it 10-3 lead heading to the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh Davis and
Nate Mieszkowski homered to make it a 13-5 game with a Doherty single to right field scoring
Matt Miller to end the scoring for Southern. Northwest chipped away with a three run homer in th eighth but it was a Lions 14-11 victory to claim the series against the Bearcats.
Up next will be the third and final game in the series against Northwest Missouri with first pitch from the Bearcat Baseball Field set for 1:00pm on Sunday.
