Arkadelphia, Ark. - The Missouri Southern baseball program picked up its fifth straight win to begin the season after taking out Henderson State 4-3 today at Clyde Berry Field.
The Lions (5-0) were led by
Cole Gayman with five innings pitched while allowing only two hits, striking out four and picked up his first win of the season.
Brandon Overman came in relief and pitched three innings while issuing no walks and
Kyle Kaempf picked up his first career save.
Will Doherty led the team with two RBIs with
Chayton Beck the other Lion to get an RBI and
Tyler Ferguson worked out two walks to lead the team.
Henderson State (2-2) had Nick Sestito pick up the loss after 2.2 innings of work while Louis Holt, Logan Cowart and Colton Patterson had an RBI each.
In the second inning Southern got the scoring started thanks to a Doherty double to left center scoring Ferguson and
Treghan Parker before a groundout allowed Doherty to score later on in the inning, making it 3-0. The Reddies got one back in the bottom half of the second but
Garrett Rice scored off an error to make it a 4-1 lead for the Lions in the third.
The scoring would stop for both teams until the ninth were Henderson State got two runs across before Kaempf got the third out with a swinging strikeout to ensure the Lions 4-3 winners.
Up next for the Lions is a three game series against Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. The teams will play in one game tomorrow at 4:00pm before playing in a double header on Saturday with first pitch set for 1:00pm and 4:00pm at Ferriss Field.
