Box Score 4 Arkadelphia, Ark. - The Missouri Southern softball program finished the Ronnie Hawkins/Mike McGhee Memorial Tournament with a 4-1 win today over hosts Henderson State at Dee White Field.
The Lions (4-1) began the week off with a 7-1 win over Northwestern Oklahoma and a 9-8 comeback win over Arkansas - Monticello in Hot Springs, Ark. on Friday.
Southern played Henderson State (2-2) and Ouachita Baptist (1-2) on Saturday in Arkadelphia, picking up a 15-2 six inning run rule win over the Tigers and lost 11-3 against the Reddies. Against the Reddies,
Leighton Withers went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and
Yazmin Vargas went 3-for-3 and scored a run in the game.
Against the Tigers, Withers posted some historic numbers against her former team going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and three runs scored while hitting two home runs. Her six RBIs are tied with Patsy Hudson (Apr. 9, 1988), Kelley Hale (Mar. 10, 2000) and Sarah Williams (Mar. 1, 2016) for third in single-game ranks for the Lions and was the first multi home run game since
Ashlynn Williams had two against Concordia - St. Paul on Mar. 6, 2021.
Today the Lions finished the tournament off with a 4-1 win over Henderson State as
Yazmin Vargas stole three bases and scored three times while Williams led the team with two RBIs and
Avery Tallman struck out a career-high nine Reddies and issued no walks to claim her second win of the season.
Up next for Southern will be the Alvy Early Memorial Classic in Bentonville, Ark. where the Lions wil play from Feb. 10th - 12th. The Lions are set to play Southeastern Oklahoma (11:00am) and Illinois Springfield (1:30pm) on Friday, Southern Nazarene (11:00am) and Harding (1:30pm) on Saturday before ending the tournament on Sunday against Southwest Baptist at 1:30pm with all games being played at Memorial Park Fields.
