Bethany, Okla. - The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team traveled to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the #12 ranked Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene. A second half push from the Crimson Storm was enough to edge out the Lions, 73-52. The Lions advance to 2-1 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter, with both teams shooting below 50 percent from the field. The back-and-forth action ended the first in a 13-10 lead for the Crimson Storm.
Kaitlin Hunnicutt led the Lions in the first, scoring six points (2-2 FG), one rebound and one block.
The back-and-forth action continued over to the second quarter for both teams. Despite never gaining the lead, the Lions did manage to tie the game twice and ultimately only trialed by two points going into the half as Southern Nazarene led 26-24.
Ryan Franklin and
Kaitlin Hunnicutt led the Lions at the half in scoring with six points each, and
Brandi Hudson put up four.
The Crimson Storm jumped out on a quick 11-0 run to start the third quarter, taking a 37-24 lead over the Lions with seven minutes remaining. The Lions were able to contain the Crimson Storm from gaining any more of a significant lead, but still found themselves trailing at the end of the third, 52-39.
An 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter for the Crimson Storm was enough to put the game out of reach for the Lions. Despite the efforts of the Lions to fight back into the game, Southern Nazarene's lead was too much to overcome and the Crimson Storm defeated the Lions, 73-52.
Three Lions finished tied for leading scorer:
Brandi Hudson with eight points (3-7 FG), seven rebounds and one steal,
Kaitlin Hunnicutt with eight points (3-7 FG), two rebounds, one block and one steal, and
Maggie Sockey with eight points (2-3 FG).
The MSSU Women's Basketball team will travel to San Angelo, Texas to compete in the Rambelle Thanksgiving Classic where they will play Angelo State on November 24 at 1:00 PM, and Midwestern State on November 25 at 3:00 PM at the Junell Center.
