Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern volleyball team was back at home Friday evening following a three game road trip. Visiting Joplin for the second time this season was Newman, having played in the Southern Invite but not facing MSSU. Friday's results had the Lions sweeping the Jets, 3-0 to improve to 11-6 (4-4 MIAA) on the year.
With the score at 8-5 in the first set, MSSU went on back-to-back five point runs to take a controlling 18-6 lead. They'd go on to win the first set 25-12. Trying to answer back, the Jets had an 8-4 lead in the second set, but seven straight MSSU points put the Lions back in the driver's seat. Southern took a 2-0 lead with a 25-17 second set score. Continuing that momentum, MSSU won eight of the first nine points in the third set, scoring the first six in a row. The match was closed out with a 25-10 third set victory, completing the 3-0 sweep.
The kills category was led by
Laci Ownbey, finishing with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .385.
Amelia Neels also recorded a .583 hitting percentage on 7 kills.
Hannah Allick was all over the court, leading the match with 29 assists, recording 4 service aces, while collecting 7 digs and 2 block assists.
Next up for MSSU will be Missouri Western, playing the Griffons in Joplin on Tuesday, October 10. That match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.
