Joplin, Mo. - The Lion volleyball team hosted the Missouri Western Griffons Tuesday evening at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Although the final was a 3-0 victory by Missouri Western, all three sets were very close. Southern falls to 11-7 (4-5 MIAA) with the loss.
MSSU won the first three points of the match, but ultimately dropped the first set which featured multiple runs by both teams, 25-18. Going back and forth again in the second set, the Griffons used a late push to take the second set 25-21. Although MWSU had another late run in the third set to take the lead, MSSU responded with a run of their own to force extra points. Despite the push, the Griffons took the third set 26-24 to win the match.
Kyra Thomas led the Lions in kills, finishing with a .217 hitting percentage. She also had 4 block assists in the match.
Hannah Allick had the team-high in assists, collecting 24 on the evening. In the digs category,
Sydney Unruh recorded 19 and
Fernanda Canedo had 13.
Missouri Southern will make a lengthy road trip for their next two competitions, traveling to Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney to face the Tigers and Lopers. Those contests will be Friday, October 13 at 6:00 PM and Saturday, October 14 at 2:00 PM respectively.
