Women's Basketball To Host Ichabods/Lady Hornets

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball program is set to host Washburn and Emporia State this weekend inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Ichabod Scout
This season Washburn is 7-6, 3-4 MIAA in Lora Westling's first season leading the program. The Ichabods have Aubree Dewey as the leading scorer at 10.8 per game while addidn 3.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game as well. Natalia Figueroa averages 9.5 points and 3.1 rebounds a game while going 25-of-69 from three. Emma Chapman is averaging 7.0 points and 5.2 rebounds a game with Gabi Artis averaging 6.3 points and 3.5 rebounds a game as well. Macy Doebele is averaging 7.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game with Mackenzie Gamble averaging 6.8 points and 2.8 rebounds a game.

ESU Scout
This season Emporia State is 9-5, 4-5 MIAA in Toby Wynn'sKatie Horyna fifth season leading the Lady Hornets. Leading the way is former MIAA Freshman of the Year Tre'Zure Jobe with 20.6 points and 2.2 assists a game. Victoria Price averages 937 points and 3.2 rebounds a game, Faith Paramore is averaging 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. Maary Lakes is averaging 4.9 points and 4.9 rebounds a game to lead the team and has 11 blocks while is averaging 5.9 points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Ehlaina Hartman is averaging 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a game and along with Jobe, Price and Paramore has made 10 or more three's this season.

Freshman Revolution
Against Lincoln, Washburn had a trio of freshman combined for 44 points to lead the way in a 73-59 win. Of the five freshman to feature this season four are averaging double digit minutes per game with Figueroa and Artis leading the way at 28.3 and 22.5 minutes a piece. 

Tre'Zure Jobe
The former MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2019-20 has built up quite a career for the Lady Hornets with eight MIAA Player of the Week honors to go with being the MIAA Player of the Year in 2020-21, two first-team All-MIAA seasons, a second-team All-MIAA selection last season and has been named to the All-MIAA All-Defensive team as well. The junior guard has played in 100 games with 1,815 points, 332 rebounds, 333 assists and 266 steals while going 184-of-579 from three (31.8) and 321-of-401 (80.0) from free throws.

3's Are Timeless
654 Straight games have been played by the Lions where at least one three was made, the streak began back in the 1999-00 season after the first weekend of the season where the Lions went 0-7 from deep on Nov. 20th, 1999 in Tahlequah, Okla against Southern Arkansas losing 68-53. During the streak the Lions have made one three in 25 games, two in 53 games, three in 68 games, four in 81 games, five in 89 games, six in 92 games, seven in 65 games, eight in 65 games, nine in 50 games, 10 in 35 games, 11 in 10 games, 12 in 10 games, 13 in eight games and 14 in three games.


Small Town Missouri
This season the Lions will have four members of the team from small towns in Missouri on the roster with Layne Skiles from Purdy, Madi Stokes from Cassville along with Lacy Stokes and Cameron Call hailing from Mount Vernon. Combined the three towns have a population of 8,728 which accounts for 16.8 percent of the population of Joplin (51,846). The towns are connected by a 50 minute drive going from Cassville-to-Purdy-to-Mount Vernon and are each under an hour and a half drive from Joplin.

Madi's Specialty
Madi Stokes is the only Lion ever to have four straight seasons of 30 or more blocks with Caryn Schumaker from 1988-91 having seasons of 38, 39 and 30 blocks to be the only other Lion with at least three years of 30 or more blocks. Stokes holds the second and third best block totals for a single season in program history along with having the second and fourth best per game average as well. Among single game ranks she is the only Lion to ever have a 5, 6 and 7 block game and has had 11 games with four or more blocks in her career.

The 500 Point Quartet
Coming into the season Amaya Johns (643) needed just eight more points to become the 66th Lion in program history to score 500 career points, she duly delivered in the season opener against #23 Lubbock Christian to join teammates: Layne Skiles (902), Lacy Stokes (875) and Madi Stokes (836) with all three crossing the threshold last season.

Bench Spark Specialist
Amaya Johns in her career has scored 643 points in 68 games with 12 starts wearing the Green and Gold. Johns for her career averages 18.0 minutes, 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds a game while shooting 73.1 percent from free throws going 114-of-156. This season the guard/forward is off to a good start averaging 9.3 points and 5.1 rebounds a game in 18.0 minutes. Johns is one of just one of four players in program history to score over 600 career points while being used mostly off the bench with Lyndsey Kenealy (96-00) having 867 points ranking 24th, Jenson Maydew (14-18) having 749 points ranking 38th and Dominique Mosley (12-14) having 650 points ranking 47th in career scoring.

Not Your Normal Quadfecta
It is not every day you set a new standard but against Northeastern State (Jan. 11, 2022) Layne Skiles did that. Skiles who currently has 902 points, 153 three's, 161 free throws and 148 assists in her career becoming the first Lion to have 500+ points, 100+  made three's, made free throws and assists provided in a career. Became the 14th Lion to have 100+ three's, the 52nd to have 500+ points and 100+ free throws and the 53rd Lion to have 100+ career assists since 1984-85.

Kryslyn Clear
New to the team this season is Kryslyn Jones a junior guard from Edmond, Okla. who played for Texas A&M - Kingsville last season after being at Seminole State for two years. Jones was an All-LSC (Lone Star Conference) third team selection last season after averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals a game while going 49-of-130 from three (37.7). Jones helped the Javelinas to their first winning season since the 2009-10 season and made the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time since 2018-19. At Seminole State she was a NJCAA Region II Player of the Year, NJCAA and WBCA All-American, Region II All-Tournament selection along with being an All-Region first teamer. For the Lions she is averaging 9.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals a game while shooting 38.7 percent from three going 29-of-75 from deep.

Sweet Like Honey
Kaitlin Hunnicutt is nearing 500 career points for the Green and Gold with 428 currently in 69 games. The guard who is a starter for the second year in a row and is currently 74-of-235 for 31.5 percent from three to rank tied for 21st in makes, 22nd in attempts and 24th for percentage among qualified shooters. Last year Hunnicutt became the first player since Krista Clark (Dec. 30, 2017) to have a five or more steal game against Rogers State (Dec. 11, 2021) and ended the season with 30 to rank third on the team

Emerging Topping
Mia Topping is enjoying an expanded role this season off the bench with the sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas playing in 10.4 minutes while averaging 3.5 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 84.2 percent from free throws (16-of-19). This season Topping had an impressive game against Central Christian College (Nov. 26, 2022) finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists to go with two blocks and two steals. On the road at Newman she finished with seven points, five assists, and four rebounds while going 3-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from three against the Jets.
