Lions Shoot Down Jets 4-0, Boswell Picks Up First Career Win

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program stormed out to a 4-0 win tonight at Hal Bodon Field over Newman with four different goal scorers as Sadé Boswell picked up her first career win in charge of the Lions

The Lions (1-7, 1-1 MIAA) were led by Aisley Stevens who had a goal and an assist tonight while having three shots. Ashley Koepp, Mia Barkyoumb and Mackenzie Scholtz also got on the scoresheet tonight with Jori Hays and Kylie Stonestreet picking up an assist as well. Lilly Doneghue had eight saves in the shutout win while playing the full 90 minutes in goal. Barkyoumb led the game with five shots and had three shots on goal, as a team the Lions had 30 shots with 13 shots on goal tonight to tie for the second most shots in a game as a team (October 2, 2002 at Missouri S&T). 

Newman (0-8-1, 0-2-0 MIAA) was led by Maylani Birchbickler and Morgan Houston with two shots on goal each while Morgan Blackwell also had two shot tonight. Jordan Webster had eight saves in goal over the 90 minutes tonight. 

For the first time this season the Lions took a lead in the first half as a Stevens low cross was tipped in by Koepp in the 13thminute for a 1-0 lead and the Lions wouldn't look back from threre. At the half Southern had the advantage in shots 17-5, corners 5-1 and forced five free kicks while controlling the game and getting into dangerous positions. 

The second half saw some drizzling rain but the Lions were raining in goals with Scholtz pressuring a mistake and scoring from close range in the 56th minute, Stevens scoring off a corner kick play with Hays picking up the assist in the 65th minute and the final blow in the 73rd minute as Barkyoumb was set loose by a Stonestreet ball and scored from close range to cap off the night.

Again, the Lions held the advantage with 13 shots to nine by the Jets and overall won the shot battle with 30-14, shots on goal were 13-8 in favor of the Lions and the team had six corners as well tonight. 

Up next for the Lions is a date with #12 Central Oklahoma that lost tonight to #6 Central Missouri 1-0 in Warrensburg. The Bronchos are set to come to Joplin on Sunday with kickoff from Hal Bodon Field set for 2:00pm.
