Springfield, Mo. – The Missouri Southern baseball team got a go-ahead three-run from
Matt Miller in the sixth inning as the Lions scored five runs in the inning en route to winning at No. 30 ranked Drury, 8-6 tonight.
Southern (26-20) got a 2-for-5 day at the plate, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored from Miller.
Chayton Beck had a double, two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, while
Henry Kusiak and
Drew Davis had a double each.
Nate Mieszkowski had a run and an RBI, while
Case Tucker did the same.
Treghan Parker,
Jordan Fitzpatrick and Davis scored a run each.
Cole Gayman started and went four and two thirds, striking out a pair.
Cale McCallister threw an inning and a third and picked up the win to move to 3-0, while
Scott Duensing threw two innings, striking out four to get the hold.
Laif Hultine threw a perfect ninth, striking out the final batter looking to get the save, his fourth of the season.
Drury (29-13) was led by Aaron Mann with three hits, while Nico Calabro drove in a pair.
The Lions got the scoring started in the top of the first as Kusiak had an RBI double to score Miller to give Southern an early 1-0 lead.
Drury answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 2-1, before the Lions got a run in the second to tie it up on a sacrifice fly from Beck to score Fitzpatrick.
The Panthers got a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before the Lions' big inning in the sixth.
Tucker and Mieszkowski had RBI singles to get the Lions within a run before Miller's three-run blast to right to put the Lions up 7-5 heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Drury added a run in the bottom of the 6
th to get within a run, but the Lions added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double from Beck that scored Parker.
The Panthers threatened in the seventh, but Duensing struck out a pair to get out of the threat. After a scoreless eighth, Hultine came on in the ninth to shut the door.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend as Southern plays host to Missouri Western on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be Senior Day, while Sunday will feature a Back the Blue theme.
