Tahlequah, Okla. – The Missouri Southern baseball team hit five home runs en route to breaking the single-season home run record, but the Lions fell 19-7 today at Northeastern State.
Southern (25-20, 15-15 MIAA) got a pair of homers from
Drew Davis as well as home runs from
Nate Mieszkowski,
Ryan Doran and
Tyler Ferguson in the game. Doran, Ferguson and Davis drove in a pair, while Mieszkowski and Daivs had two runs scored each.
Cole Woods started and went four and a third.
Laif Hultine,
Scott Duensing,
Steen Lane and
Jeremiah Kennedy threw in relief.
Southern got on the board first with a pair of home runs in the first inning. Doran smacked a two-run blast to score Mieszkowski, before Davis hit the first of his two to give the Lions a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
The RiverHawks (32-13, 20-10 MIAA) picked up five runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 5-3 after one.
After another run from NSU in the third, Ferguson homered in the fourth to score
Jordan Fitzpatrick and get the Lions within one (6-5) heading to the bottom of the fourth.
NSU added a run in the bottom half of the inning before the Lions answered with Davis' second homer of the game to make the score 7-6 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The RiverHawks scored six in the bottom half of the inning and after a homer from Mieszkowski in the sixth, led 13-7 heading to the eighth. Six runs came in in the eighth to end the game.
The Lions broke the single-season home run record this weekend as they smashed ten homers over the weekend to get to 83 on the season. The previous record was 81 set in 2017.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday evening as the Lions head out of MIAA play to take on Drury. First pitch from USA Baseball Park in Ozark is set for 5 pm.
