VanWey Strikes Out 14 In 10-0 Shutout Of Fort Hays State

Joplin, Mo. – Logan VanWey had 14 strikeouts in a shutout win today as Case Tucker went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in a 10-0 run-rule win for the Missouri Southern Baseball team over Fort Hays State at Warren Turner Field.
 
Southern (21-12, 12-7 MIAA) got a stellar performance on the mound from VanWey as the Webb City native struck out the side twice en route to 14 k's over seven innings allowing just three hits in the shutout win to move to 4-2 on the season.
 
Tucker went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a double and a run scored, including the game-ending two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Stevenson went 2-for-3 with a home run, and RBI and two runs scored, while Henry Kusiak added a home run and drove in two.
 
Matt Miller and Chayton Beck had two hits each, whiel Miller drove in a pair and scored a run. Beck had a run and an RBI. Treghan Parker, Jordan Fitzpatrick, Nate Mieszkowski and Ryan Doran had a hit and a run scored each while Mieszkowski drove in one.
 
FHSU (3-28, 2-17 MIAA) had a hit each from three different players, while Padraic Walsh struck out five in relief.
 
Tucker got the scoring started for the Lions as he drove in Mieszkowski in the first. Kusiak then homered to right center, scoring Tucker to make the score 3-0. Miller reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Stevenson and Beck singled home Fitzpatrick to give the Lions a 5-0 lead after one.
 
Miller had an RBI single in the third, scoring Doran, before Mieszkowski had a sacrifice fly to score Parker to make the score 7-0 after three.
 
Stevenson added a homer in the fourth to make it 8-0 and Tucker singled home Beck and Miller to end the game.
 
The Lions started the afternoon by honoring 50 years of Missouri Southern baseball, welcoming back alums from the past five decades, as well as naming the first-base dugout in memory of the first head coach at MSSU, Ed Wuch.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Lions play host to the Tigers. First pitch from Warren Turner Field is set for 1 pm.
