Fitzpatrick Homers In 6-4 Loss At Newman

Wichita, Kan. – The Missouri Southern baseball team got a home run from Jordan Fitzpatrick, but a five-run sixth inning lifted Newman over the Lions 6-4 today in the series finale.

The Lions (25-17, 15-12 MIAA) had a 2-for-4 day from Matt Miller as he had an RBI double. Jordan Fitzpatrick had a home run and two drove in two, while four others had a hit each. Henry Kusiak, Treghan Parker and Chayton Beck had a run scored.

Cole Woods started and went five innings, striking out three and allowing just one run, but had to leave the game in the sixth. Laif Hultine threw the final three innings and struck out five but was saddled with the loss.

Newman (22-18, 12-15 MIAA) had a pair with two RBIs each.

The Lions got on board in the second with a two-run blast from Fitzpatrick. Newman answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to get within a run (2-1).

Neither team scored the next three innings, but the Jets exploded for five in the sixth to go up 6-2.

The Lions got a single run in each of the seventh and eighth innings as Beck scored in the seventh and Miller drove in Kusiak in the eighth. The Lions threatened in the ninth, but Newman worked a double-play to end the game.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend as Southern will travel to Tahlequah to take on Northeastern State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
