Wichita, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern baseball program got four hits from
Ryan Doran and three from
Treghan Parker, but the Lions fell 16-9 today in the series opener at Newman.
Southern (24-16, 14-11 MIAA) got a 4-for-5 day at the plate from Doran as he scored three times with a pair of doubles and had a walk. Parker went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored and had a pair of doubles, himself.
Chayton Beck had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while
Henry Kusiak had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Jordan Fitzpatrick had a home run and two RBIs, while
Nate Mieszkowski had two hits, as well.
Jacob Davis started but lasted just one inning.
Chase Beiter threw two and two thirds in relief and fell to 2-2 on the season.
Ryan Paschal,
Scott Duensing and
Alex Baker threw in relief.
Newman (21-17, 11-14) had four players with multiple hits.
The Jets went up 3-0 after one, but the Lions answered right back and scored a pair of runs on an RBI double from Parker and a sacrifice fly from Beck to make it 3-2 heading to the bottom of the second.
Newman answered again and scored four runs in the second to go up 7-2.
This time it was the Lions' turn to answer as Southern plated six runs in the third. Fitzpatrick started it with a two-run blast to get Southern within three (7-4) and Parker cleared the bases with a double to center to tie the game at seven. Kusiak then had a sacrifice fly to score Parker to give the Lions an 8-7 lead heading to the bottom half of the inning.
The Jets added a run in the third to tie it and five in the fourth to put the game away.
Southern added an RBI single from Beck in the sixth.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 3 pm first pitch.
