Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team got a home run from
Henry Kusiak, while
Jacob Davis and
Laif Hultine combined for the shutout as Southern took game one of the series with Fort Hays, 4-0 at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (20-12, 11-7 MIAA) got seven outstanding innings from Davis as the lefty struck out nine and scattered just three hits. Hultine threw the final two innings of hitless ball, striking out one.
FHSU (3-27, 2-16 MIAA) had three players with a hit each.
Kusiak went 2-for-4 with a home run, two driven in and a run scored.
Nate Mieszkowski was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while
Case Tucker, Tommy STevenson,
Jordan Fitzpatrick,
Cole Robinson,
Matt Miller and
Treghan Parker had a hit each. Tucker and Miller drove in a run each, while Tucker and Robinson scored.
Southern got on board first with a run in the fifth as Miller drove home Robinson with a sacrifice fly. The Lions then scored three more runs in the sixth as Tucker Singled home Mieszkowski and then Kusiak homered on the next pitch.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon for a 1 pm first pitch. The day will feature a celebration of 50 years of Missouri Southern baseball as alums from all five decades will be in attendance and will be honored prior to the game.
