Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern baseball team led 3-1 after four innings, but Washburn scored seven unanswered runs and the Lions fell 8-4 in the series finale today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (16-11, 7-6 MIAA) had a good day at the plate from freshman catcher
Chayton Beck who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the game.
Nate Mieszkowski had a pinch hit, while
Jordan Fitzpatrick and
Treghan Parker had a hit each. Parker,
Henry Kusiak,
Case Tucker and
Cole Robinson had a run each.
Cole Woods started and struck out eight batters, going four and two thirds to get the no-decision.
Ryan Paschal went two thirds of an inning and was saddled with the loss (0-1).
Cale McCallister and
Laif Hultine threw in relief.
Washburn (19-7, 10-3 MIAA) got a 4-for-5 day at the plate from Cal Watkins as four others had two hits each.
Woods started the game on fire as he struck out the first six batters he faced.
The Lions started the scoring as Southern got an RBI single from Beck in the second to go up 1-0 after two.
Washburn answered to tie it at one after three, but the Lions scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI from Beck, while Robinson scored on a throwing error.
The Ichabods stormed back and scored two runs in the fifth and sixth, while adding a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
The Lions got a run in the ninth on a wild pitch.
The game featured a 37-minute rain/lightning delay in the seventh inning.
The Lions were scheduled to pay at Drury this Wednesday, but that game has been postponed. No make-up date has yet been announced. Southern will now play at Emporia State this weekend with a three-game set with the Hornets.
