Emporia, Kan. – The Missouri Southern baseball team scored five runs over the first three innings and the Lions took out Emporia State 6-2 tonight in the series opener at Glennen Field.
The Lions (17-11, 8-6 MIAA) got a solid day at the plate from
Cole Robinson as he went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.
Ryan Doran had a double, two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while
Case Tucker had a pair of hits of his own.
Nate Mieszkowski and
Ryan Cline had a run scored each, while
Matt Miller had an RBI.
Jacob Davis started and went six innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run.
Cale McCallister threw the final three innings, striking out three and walking none to pick up the save.
ESU (10-17, 4-10 MIAA) got three hits from Noah Geekie and two from Blake Carroll.
Southern got the scoring started in the first when Robinson hit the first of his two doubles on the night, scoring Kusiak and Mieszkowski.
Robinson and Doran had back-to-back doubles in the third to score the first of three runs in the inning. Kusiak scored on Robinson's double and Robinson scored on Doran's. After a single from Tucker, Miller doubled home Tucker to give the Lions a 5-0 lead after three.
The Hornets got a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, before Cline scored on a wild pitch in the eighth for the Lions' final run.
Davis held the Hornets' hitters at bey for most of the game, allowing just a single run, while McCallister threw the final three innings to shut down the Hornets.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
