Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Lions couldn't complete the comeback, falling 8-7 to Washburn at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (16-10, 7-5 MIAA) was led by
Henry Kusiak as he went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run as well as a triple in the game, driving in two and scoring twice.
Cole Robinson had a three-run homer, while
Case Tucker went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Treghan Parker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Chayton Beck scored a run.
Logan VanWey started and was stellar on the mound, going seven innings, striking out 13 and allowing just three hits nad two runs.
Ryan Paschal,
Cale McCallister,
Laif Hultine,
Scott Duensing and
Jeremiah Kennedy threw in relief. Duensing drew the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Washburn (18-7, 9-3 MIAA) got a go-ahead home run from Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli in the top of the ninth to give the Ichabods the win. He drove in four and scored twice in the game.
The Lions got the scoring started in the first when
Ryan Doran scored Kusiak on a ground out. After Washburn tied it in the third and went ahead in the fifth, the Lions went ahead on Kusiak's home run, scoring Ferguson.
Southern added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI from Parker.
The Ichabods broke open the game in the ninth as Washburn scored six runs, with the big blast coming on the homer from Clark-Chiapparelli.
The Lions made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, however. With two on, Robinson nailed his first home run of the season to get Southern within one (8-7). Southern had two aboard after the home run, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The two teams will play again tomorrow morning. First-pitch for the series finale is set for 9:30 am as the teams try to beat the rain in the forecast.
