Baseball Drops A Pair To Pitt State

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team got a pair of home runs from Ryan Doran, but the Lions couldn't stop the hot-hitting Pittsburg State Gorillas as Southern dropped both ends of a double-header today at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (7-7, 0-2 MIAA) fell 10-4 in game one and 21-9 in the finale.

Southern had two hits each in the opener from Jordan Fitzpatrick, Henry Kusiak and Clay Milas. Kusiak scored a pair of runs, while he and Milas had a double each. Treghan Parker had a triple, while Tommy Stevenson hit his sixth homer of the season.

Logan VanWey started in the opener and struck out four in three and two thirds of an inning. Jacob Davis threw the final five and a third, striking out five himself.

The Lions scored a pair of runs in the first on RBI doubles from Kusiak and Milas to go up 2-1 after one. Pitt (6-6, 2-0 MIAA) answered with four runs in the third and two in the fourth before the Lions added single runs in the sixth on Stevenson's homer and in the eighth on an RBI from Parker.

Game two saw the Lions lead 4-0 after one inning, but the Gorillas scored seven runs in three different innings to put the game away.

Doran had a pair of home runs in the game and drove in four, while Nate Mieszkowski went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Stevenson had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI, while walking twice.

Chase Beiter started in game two, while Cole Gayman, Ryan Paschal, Cale McCallister, Steen Lane, Blake McPhee and Chayton Beck threw in relief.

The two teams will finish off the series tomorrow with a single game at 3 pm.
