Lions Complete The Weekend Sweep With 10-8 Win Over UIS

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish the MIAA/GLVC Crossover undefeated as the Lions defeated Illinois-Springfield 10-8 at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (7-5) got a stellar day at the plate from freshman Treghan Parker as the Webb City native went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including a walk and a pair of doubles. Tommy Stevenson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Matt Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Drew Davis hit his first home run of the season and had two RBIs and two runs scored, while Ryan Doran drove in two and Clay Milas scored twice.

Cole Woods started for the Green and Gold and went five and two thirds, striking out eight and walking just one. Ryan Paschal and Scott Duensing threw in relief, while Laif Hultine threw the final two and two thirds, striking out three to get the win and move to 1-1 on the season.

UIS (4-3) got a pair of RBIs from Brandon Bannon, Zion Pettigrew and Kal Youngquist.

The Prairie Stars got on top with two runs in the first and led 3-0 before an RBI double from Parker scoring Stevenson in the third to make the score 3-1 after three.

The Lions then exploded for five runs in the fourth. Miller singled home Milas to start the scoring and Parker then doubled home both Miller and Stevenson. Davis finished the scoring with a two-run shot to left field.

UIS added three in the fifth to tie the game but the Lions went back on top with an RBI from Miller to score Milas.

The Prairie Stars scored a run in the sixth and another in the top eighth to lead 8-7. Southern was not done, however, as the Lions started the eighth with a single from Stevenson. Stevenson moved up on a wild pitch and Parker walked behind him. Davis had a bunt single to load the bases and Jordan Fitzpatrick had a sacrifice fly to score Stevenson to tie it up.

After Davis stole second, Doran came through with a clutch two-RBI single to give the Lions the go-ahead win.

Hultine completed the comeback as he closed out the game for the Lions.

Southern will be back in action this weekend as the Lions play host to Pittsburg State in a three-game series starting Friday.
