Pittsburg, Kan. – The Missouri Southern track and field programs opened their indoor season today and came away with five event wins and a new school record as the team competed at the Crimson and Gold Invitational hosted by Pittsburg State at The Plaster Center.
Peyton Barton posted the biggest mark of the day as he set a new school record in the weight throw, hitting an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 21.83m (71-07.50) to take home the title in the event. The mark bested the previous record of 69-01.5 by more than two feet.
Connor Boyd was third in the weight throw with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 18.82m, while
Jordan Garr placed 8
th in a distance of 17.63m. Garr took home the title in the men's shot put as he hit an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 17.67m.
Mallory Huber nearly set a school record of her own as she won the women's weight throw with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark of 18.75m in her second attempt of the day. That mark is second-best all-time in MSSU weight throw history, just behind Danee Jones' mark of 18.84m in 2005.
Kiara Smith took home the title in the 60m hurdles as she continues to dominate the event. She crossed the finish line in an NCAA Provisional qualifying time of 8.45 and it is the fourth-fastest time in the event in MSSU history.
Brendan Jewell won the high jump as he posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying height of 2.14m. That mark is the fifth-best in MSSU high jump history.
Luke Brumit placed seventh in the event clearing a height of 2.02m.
In other action,
Rylee Darnell (1.59m) and
Jazmine Knight (1.54m) finished 7
th and 11
th in the women's open high jump, while
Mackenzie Moring (3.63m) and
Abby Hobbs (3.48m) placed 9
th and 10
th in the women's pole vault.
Lillian Hart was 10
th in the women's open long jump posting a distance of 4.93m.
Riley Simpson posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 14:29.18 in the men's 5k placing fifth, while
Malachi Pipkin (8.30) and
JaDarius Pigg (8.38) placed 6
th and 7
th in the men's 60m hurdles.
Chardae Overstreet (39.84) and
LaNea Wallace placed 6
th and 10
th in the women's 300m dash, while Pipkin was 21
st in the men's 300m dash.
Simon Siebert was 6
th in the men's 600 yard in a time of 1:15.65, while
Jacob Breedlove was 12
th crossing the line in a time of 1:17.22.
In the relays, the women's 4x400m team of Overstreet, Wallace,
Mya Ferguson and Smith placed third in an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 3:52.71, posting the fifth-fastest time in the event. The men's team in the 4x400 of Seibert, Breedlove, Pigg and Eliot Rule placed tenth in a time of 3:22.16.
The Lions will be off for a little more than a month as Southern next competes on January 20 at the Rumble in the Jungle hosted by Pittsburg State.
