Atlanta, Ga. – The Missouri Southern women's basketball program has set new program highs in the latest edition of the WBCA Coaches Poll and the D2SIDA Polls as announced by the organizations today.
This is the highest the Lions have ever been ranked by the WBCA with the previous program record being in the 1992-93 season where the Lions were ranked seventh in five weeks of the poll including the last three of the season. The 1992-93 season saw the Lions make it to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament for the first time in program history and won a record 27 games.
The Lions are off to a 7-0 start and have moved up five spots to be ranked fifth in this week's WBCA poll. Southern has taken out the preseason first and third teams in the GAC (Harding, Henderson State), the second team in the NSIC (Minnesota – Duluth) along with the second and fourth teams in the LSC (Lubbock Christian, Angelo State) preseason polls. The Central Region features Missouri Southern (5th), Minnesota State – Mankato (6th), Augustana (S.D.) (24th) while having four receiving votes in Nebraska – Kearney, Fort Hays State, Central Missouri and Minnesota – Duluth.
In the D2SIDA Poll the Lions were ranked sixth in the preseason poll before moving to fifth in week one, fourth in week two and now in week three is ranked second the highest ranking ever by the program in the polls nine year history. In the poll the Central Region is represented by Missouri Southern (2nd), Minnesota State – Mankato (9th), Augustana (S.D.) (15th), Central Missouri (23rd) with Nebraska – Kearney receiving votes.
The preseason pick to win the MIAA by both the coaches and media members the Lions will be back in action Thursday against Northwest Missouri with tip-off from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center set for 5:30pm to begin MIAA play.
