St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program began MIAA play with a 2-1 overtime loss at Spratt Stadium as Banner Williams scored her first goal of the season.
The Lions (1-5-2, 0-1-0 MIAA) worked a fast counterattack in the 8th minute into a Lariah Boone shot that hit the crossbar. Jori Hays in the 14th minute worked a shot from outside the box that forced the Griffons (4-2-2, 1-0-0 MIAA) goalie into a save. In the 26th minute the Lions won a corner kick that was cleared by a Griffon defender before being claimed by Banner Williams outside the box. Williams sent in a cross that bounced over the Griffon goalie finding its way into the far side netting of the goal, putting the Lions ahead 1-0.
Missouri Western tied it up 1-1 in the 53rd minute off a Eszter Toth goal that was assisted by Kaili Campbell. The next big chance of the game came in the 83rd minute following a Griffon defender yellow card giving a free kick to the lions outside the box Maya Greenquist's shot hit the crossbar. For the second time in two weeks the Lions and Griffons were tied at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period Missouri Southern had a free kick shot from Ashley Koepp in the 96th minute that was saved. The Griffons got the winner with almost a minute remaining in the period from Campbell on a long-range shot.
Leading the Lions was Williams with her first goal of the season, Mackenzie Scholtz had two shots, Hays, Williams, Koepp and Erin Fisher had a shot on goal as well. Doneghue in her first start of the season played in the full 98:52 minutes picking up seven saves.
The Griffons had Campbell finish with a goal and an assist while having a game-high five shots, Jaden Skinner, Toth who scored a goal as well and Campbell had two shots on goal. Anna Mayer played all 98:52 minutes in the goal for the Griffons coming away with three saves.
Up next for the Lions will be Rogers State Friday, October 1st in Joplin, Mo. It will be the Pink Game for the Lions and kickoff will be at 6:00 pm from Hal Bodon Field.
