Joplin, Mo. – Maya Greenquist scored in the 70
th minute and the Missouri Southern soccer program picked up its first MIAA win of the season beating Rogers State 1-0 at Hal Bodon Field this evening.
Southern (2-5-2, 1-1-0 MIAA) and Rogers State (6-2-1, 1-1-0 MIAA) battled for possession and creating attacking chances in the first half as both defenses stood their ground. The Hillcats had the advantage in shots 8-6 but the Lions had more corners 4-2 and were more accurate with their shots as both finished with three shots on goal.
The second half belonged to the Lions who created chances off counterattacks and in the build-up play as well and found their goal off a throw-in. The throw was to
Sofia Fatino who sent in a ball to the box where a Hillcat defender knocked it down to Greenquist who shot it into the upper netting of the goal in the 70
th minute. The Lions would hold on in the last 20 minutes to secure their first MIAA win of the season.
Greenquist now has two goals on the season and led the team with three shots with two being shots on goal.
Ashley Koepp and
Tayler Ohu each had two shots off the bench as well. In goal
Riley Laver had six saves in 90 minutes of action between the posts and picked up her second shutout of the season.
For the Hillcats Desiree Morgas had a game-high five shots with three being on goal, as Andrea Egerer and Sarah Ovalle had two shots each as well. Savannah Harvey was in goal for all 90 minutes for Rogers State collecting four saves in the loss.
Up next for the Lions will be Northeastern State on Sunday, kickoff from Hal Bodon Field is set for 2:00 pm.
