Lions Score Four, Shutout Crimson Storm

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program got its first win of the season in dominating fashion beating Southern Nazarene this evening at Hal Bodon Field 4-0 with four different Lions scoring.
 
Southern (1-2-1, 0-0-0 MIAA) got a goal right before halftime in the 40th minute after peppering the Southern Nazarene goalkeeper to the tune of 13 first-half shots. 
 
Midfielder Allie Cook picked up  her first goal as a Lion from a corner that was sent in by midfielder Braylee Childers. Southern owned the first half advantage in shots (13-8), shots on goal (6-2) and corners (4-0).
 
The second half saw more of the same for the Lions playing primarily in the attacking third of the field and putting constant pressure on the Crimson Storms' defense and goalie. 
 
Forward Aisley Stevens pressured the Southern Nazarene goalie into a clearance that Stevens deflected before punching in the free ball and shooting into an empty net to set the Lions ahead 2-0 in the 53rd minute. 
 
Forward Ashley Koepp got her first goal of the season in the 66th minute off an assist from fellow forward Mackenzie Scholtz to push the lead to 3-0. Midfielder Lily Spikereit finished off the scoring in the 72nd minute from a corner from midfielder Maya Greenquist to put the game at its final score of 4-0. 
 
The Lions finished the game with 26 shots, one more than the 25 they posted in their previous game against William Jewell. Southern held the advantage over Southern Nazarene in shots (26-14), shots on goal (12-5) and corner kicks (8-2).
 
Individually forward Ella Durocher led the way with four shots. Stevens was joined by forward Tayler Ohu with three shots as well. The trio of Durocher, Stevens and Ohu tied for the Lions' lead in shots on goal with two each. Goalie Riley Laver collected five saves in her first shutout of the season and was stationed in goal for the full 90 minutes of the game.
 
Southern Nazarene was led by forwards Kaitlyn Deaton and Alejandre Andrade with five shots each and Andrade was tied with defender Isabella Kingsakongthong for the team lead with two shots on goal. Eliya Alvidrez played 75:20 minutes in goal for the Crimson storm picking up seven saves and Abegayle Black played the remainder of the match and collected one save.
 
Up next for the Lions will be a nationally ranked weekend with #24 Missouri Western on Friday Septemeber 17that 6:00 pm, and #7 Central Missouri on Sunday the 19th at 2:00 pm, both games will be played at Hal Bodon Field.
