Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern track and field programs will have one last meet before the nationally-ranked Lions prepare for the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in two weeks as the Lions head to Nebraska-Kearney this weekend.
Southern will go into the UNK Twilight with the women ranked fifth nationally and the men, ninth. The Southern women recently won the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Championship, while the men finished second.
The meet will serve as a last-chance for anyone that has not already qualified automatically for the Championship or wants to improve on their current time to do so. Events will begin at 3 pm on both Saturday and Sunday with identical events on each day. Southern will send a group of throwers, vaulters and sprinters to the event.
The women have 21 NCAA Automatic and Provisional Qualifying marks this season. The Lions have three AQ's led by
Elizabeth Pomatto and
Katelyn Mooney who rank first and third in the javelin, while
Kirsten Leisinger is second in the hammer. All-told, the Lions have seven top-five marks nationally.
The men have 25 NCAA Automatic and Provisional Qualifying marks coming into the meet. The Lions have five AQ's this season led by
Rajindra Campbell who ranks first in the shot put and third in the discus.
Rajheim Carby is sixth in the Javelin, while
Travis Petersen is seventh in the hammer throw.
Ryan Riddle is 12
th in the 5k. In total, the Lions have six top-ten marks this season.
