Emporia, Kan. - The Missouri Southern softball program split its games today in the Emporia State 5-State Classic playing Quincy and Concordia - St. Paul.
The Lions picked up the win in game one 10-5 against Quincy (3-6) that was keyed by a seven-run third inning. Southern got on the board first with Josie Tofpi getting an RBI single before Kara Amos notched a two RBI single putting the Lions up 3-0 after the first inning. Quincy picked up three runs in the third tying the game before the Lions exploded in the bottom half of the inning for seven runs.
Grace Parrot had a two-RBI double to start the scoring before Sidnie Hurst and Tofpi hit two-RBI singles each and Ashlynn Williams had an RBI single to finish the scoring in the third inning with the Lions up 10-3.
Kara Amos picked up her third win of the season pitching four innings before handing it over to Abby Atkin for the final three innings. Yazmin Vargas finished the game going 3-of-4 scoring twice, Amos went 3-of-4 with two RBIs and Tofpi went 2-of-4 with a team-high three RBIs.
Game two pitted Southern (5-3) against Concordia - St. Paul (3-4), CSP came away with the win on a walk-off sac fly.
Southern got on the board in the second inning as Williams hit her first home run of the night. In the fourth inning the Lions scored two runs off an error by the Golden Bears' first basemen taking the lead 3-2. CSP responded in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo home run to tie it at three all.
Williams put the Lions back ahead off her second solo home run of the game in the sixth inning putting the score at 4-3. In the seventh the Golden Bears singled a run in before hitting a walk-off sac fly to win.
Abbey Gann pitched 6.2 innings for the Lions and struck out three batters. Williams finished 2-of-3 with two home runs.
Next up for the Lions is Minnesota State - Mankato at 9:30 am and Illinois - Springfield at 2:30 pm to finish up the ESU 5-State Classic tomorrow
