Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern softball program hits the road taking on William Jewell in a non-conference double-header tomorrow in Liberty, Mo. First pitch from Cardinal Field is set for 12 pm.
Southern (10-10, 3-3 MIAA) as a team leads the MIAA in double plays turned (9) and stolen bases (39), second in triples (7) and fifth in scoring average (5.44). Nationally the Lions rank 10
th in double plays turned, 17
th in triples and 28
th in stolen bases. Individually five batters are hitting above .330 this season (
Kara Amos,
Leighton Withers,
Yazmin Vargas,
Ashlynn Williams and
Josie Tofpi) led by Tofpi's .367. Williams ranks second in the MIAA with 1.11 RBIs per game, third in RBIs (20), fourth in triples (2), and is seventh in slugging percentage (.727), has a .345 batting average while leading the team with four home runs. Vargas has a .338 batting average leading the team with 24 hits and scoring 18 runs, leads the MIAA with 15 steals and averages 0.78 stolen bases per game. Withers is second on the team with 17 RBIs and a .578 slugging percentage.
Amos as a batter ranks sixth in the MIAA for on-base percentage at .472 and is second on the team with three home runs. As a pitcher Amos is 4-4 with a 3.11 ERA having pitched 45 innings and striking out 35 batters while limiting opposing batters to a .271 batting average.
Abby Atkin is 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA in 48.1 innings of work, both are coming off of complete games against Pittsburg State Sunday.
William Jewell (6-16, 5-7 GLVC) is led offensively by Allison Rawls with a .354 batting average .970 OPS, 23 hits, four doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs and a .538 slugging percentage. Sammie Welt is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 40.1 innings of work striking out 37 batters, Aly Manhart is 2-7 with a 4.88 ERA in 47.1 innings and Kenzie Jones is 1-7 with a 5.79 ERA in 48.1 innings.
