Soccer Upsets #8 Jennies

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern soccer program picked up a 3-2 golden goal win over #8 Central Missouri today inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium. The win was the first against the Jennies since the 2013 season and the first at home since 2005.

Southern (2-3) was led by Bailey Belcher with a record tying nine shots, the last Lion with that amount was Nikki Llewellyn vs. Delta State 8-25-2007. Mackenzie Scholtz started off the scoring in the 14th minute with a shot that was intended near post before going off a Jennies defender, hitting the far netting. Belcher got her first goal of the season from a Carina Calderon corner kick, headed in the 33rd minute as the Lions went into the half up 2-0.

Central Missouri (3-2) came out in the first half firing scoring in the 52nd minute of a corner kick. Both teams traded possession and shots-on-goal as the second period was winding down before a Jennie goal with 1:40 remaining tied it up sending the game into overtime.

In overtime the Lions got off six shots compared to zero by the Jennies. Belcher claimed the golden goal winner from a Maya Greenquist feed with 1:45 remaining in the first overtime period. For the game the Lions had 18 shots (8 on goal), Jennies finished with 15 (5 on goal).

Next up for Southern is a non-conference game against Evangel Sunday March 28th with kick off set for 4 pm inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
