Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program notched a 3-1 home win over Evangel today inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium as
Maya Greenquist scored twice.
Southern (3-3) got on the board first from
Mackenzie Scholtz's second goal of the season off a rebound from a
Bailey Belcher shot in the 19
thminute. Evangel (9-6, 7-5 Heart of America NAIA) tied it up in the 26
th minute off a corner kick.
Maya Greenquist picked up her first goal of the afternoon in the 32
nd minute from an
Emilie Lafrenz assist as the Lions went into the half up 2-1.
The second half saw the Lions rattle off 16 shots and dominate possession more than in the first half controlling the game until Greenquist hit a free kick from the outside the box on the left side into the far side netting in the upper corner with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game to put it away for good. It was her third goal of the season and her first career brace.
Southern rattled off 26 shots (18 on goal) compared to Evangel with 9 shots (5 on goal) and the Lions had 12 corners compared to two for Evangel.
Bailey Belcher had a team-high six shots (two on goal),
Banner Williams,
Carina Calderon and Greequist each had four shots.
Riley Laver finished with four saves going the distance in goal picking up her third win of the season.
Belcher now has 114 career shots tied for fourth with Ashley Munnelly (01-02) and Laver has 114 career saves tied with Shawnee Phillips (2015) for eighth in school history.
Next up for the Lions is a road MIAA matchup with Missouri Western in St. Joesph, Mo. Kickoff from Spratt Stadium is set for 7 pm Friday April 2
