Soccer Comeback Falls Short

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program fell at home today against Missouri Western 2-1 in a non-conference game inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Missouri Western (2-1-1, 1-1 MIAA) jumped ahead with goals in the 21st and 44th minute to go into the half ahead 2-0. Southern (1-3, 1-0 MIAA) got a goal from Carina Calderon from outside the box in the 61st minute to set the score at 2-1. Maya Greenquist ripped a shot from well outside the box in the 89th minute that hit the inside portion of the near post, off the post the ball then angled away from the Western goal falling to a Griffon defender who cleared it to a Lion before Greenquist fired another shot this time right outside the box that was saved by the goalkeeper.

Southern did get one last chance off the Greenquist shot that was saved, as she delivered a corner into the box with less than 30 seconds remaining that was cleared by the Griffons.

For the game the Lions got off 11 shots with six being on goal, while the Griffons had 15 shots and nine were on goal. Riley Laver finished with seven saves and now has 100 career saves becoming the ninth goalkeeper in Missouri Southern history in that category. Greenquist got off three shots with two being on goal, Calderon and Ashley Koepp had two shots as well.

Next up for the Lions is Central Missouri in an MIAA conference game Friday March 26th with kick-off set for 6 pm in Joplin.
