Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern soccer program concluded its 2021 season with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Northwest Missouri this afternoon at a wet Hal Bodon Field.
The Lions (3-12-2, 2-9 MIAA) grabbed the lead in the 31st minute on a situation that was created by a
Banner Williams' shot that was deflected by the Bearcats (12-5-1, 8-2-1 MIAA) goalie.
Aisley Stevens collected the ball and slotted it into the left side netting. At the half, the Lions went in up 1-0 and had the advantage in shots on goal and corner (4-2) and tied with seen shots in the half.
Northwest Missouri tied it up in the 65th minute from a free kick deliver by Madi McKeever who found Letycia Bonifacio who headed it into the near side netting. The Lions had four shots in the final ten minutes of regulation with three requiring a save to ensure overtime was needed to separate the teams.
In the first overtime period, a shot from Kaylie Rock for Northwest Missouri was blocked in the 99th minute as both teams created chances but couldn't get shots off. The second overtime period saw
Ella Durocher force the Bearcats' goalie into a save in the 102nd minute, while in the 103rd minute the Bearcats found the game winner with Madi McKeever grabbing her second assist of the game ,this time for a Teagan Blackburn header.
Elisabeth Pujado led the Lions with three shots in the game while Durocher, Stevens and
Mackenzie Scholtz had two shots each. Scholtz, Durocher and Pujado had two shots on goal each as well to lead the team.
Riley Laver had six saves in the game being stationed in goal for all 103 minutes.
Rock led the Bearcats with five shots while Blackburn and Bonifacio had two shots on goal each to lead the team. Ashley Williams was stationed in goal for all 103 minutes for Northwest Missouri and collected nine saves in the game.
