Joplin, Mo. -- Brad Willis hit a 7th-inning go-ahead grand slam and
Zach Parish became the MIAA strikeout king as the No. 25 Missouri Southern baseball team came-from-behind to defeat Washburn 6-5 today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (14-4, 1-3 MIAA) fans were entertained early as
Zach Parish broke the MIAA all-time strikeout record today. Parish struck out seven batters to move his career total to 352, breaking the previous MIAA record previously held by Rick Nilges of Lincoln (1973-76). Parish was slated with the no-decision.
Cole Woods threw two and a third of relief and picked up the win to go to 2-0 on the season, while
Logan VanWey came in and struck out the final batter to pick up save number five.
Offensively the Lions got home runs from
Jordan Fitzpatrick and Willis. Fitzpatrick went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while
Clay Milas was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Dexter Swims was 2-for-4 with a run, while
Henry Kusiak drove in a run and scored once himself. Willis had one hit, but it was a big one as he cleared the bases with a grand slam in the seventh.
Washburn (11-9, 3-1 MIAA) got a strong start from Brock Gilliam as he struck out six in six and a third. Parker Dunn had a pair of RBIs.
The Lions got on top with a bases-loaded walk by Kusiak in the second, but the Ichabods tied it up at one with a run in the third. Washburn got three more runs in the sixth to go up 4-1, but Fitzpatrick's blast to right in the sixth cut the lead in half.
Washburn picked up another run in the seventh before Willis' grand slam in the bottom half of the inning.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch.
