Topeka, Kan. -- A ten-run inning helped lift the Missouri Southern baseball team over Washburn 15-5 today to complete the series sweep at Falley Field in Topeka.
The Lions (22-13, 10-11 MIAA) got a 3-RBI day from
Mike Million as he went 2-for-6 at the plate, with a home run, a triple and two runs scored.
Johnny Balsamo went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored, while
Cory Canterbury was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Denver Coffee went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while
Easton Fortuna went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Alex Phillips,
Garan Stevens and Jon Leigton scored two runs each, while
Alec Alvarez had an run and an RBI.
Zac Shoemaker started and went five strong innings to move his record to 4-2 on the season.
Bradly Hershey,
River Wright and
Seth Mesey threw in relief.
The Ichabods (10-25, 4-20 MIAA) had seven different players with one hit each.
Washburn scored a run in each of the first and second innings to go up 2-0 after two.
The Lions, however, broke out in a big way with ten runs in the fourth inning. Alvarez singled home Phillips to start the scoring. Canterbury scored on a wild pitch and Alvarez scored on an error. Leighton drove home Fortuna on a double, while Coffee doubled home a pair and then scored on a passed ball. Million capped the inning with a three-run bomb.
Washburn scored a run in the fourth, but the Lions answered back with two more in the fifth on RBIs from Balsamo and Canterbury.
The Ichabods scored two in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Lions added three more runs late to seal the win. Million scored on a wild pitch in the eighth and the Lions added two unearned in the ninth.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday night as the Lions play host to Pittsburg State. First pitch from Warren Turner Field is slated for 6 pm.
