Alva, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team got 18 runs in game one and six in game two as the Lions took both ends of a double-header today at Northwestern Oklahoma, winning 18-3 in the opener and 6-2 in the nightcap.
The Lions (3-0) scored all 18 runs over the final four innings in game one as Southern forced a seven-inning run rule situation of Northwestern Oklahoma (4-2).
The Riders went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third, but the Lions answered with six runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam from
Johnny Balsamo. Southern got five more in the fifth with RBIs from
Alex Wheeler,
Denver Coffee, Balsamo and Fortuna.
The Lions added four more in the sixth with RBIs from Coffee, Balsamo, and Fortuna and
Joe Kinder provided most of the pop in the seventh with a two-run shot to left center.
Balsamo led the offensive attack with a grand slam, six RBIs and a run scored, while Kinder went 3-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Coffee drove in three, while Fortuna knocked in a pair.
Will Bausinger started and went six innings, striking out four and allowing three runs to move to 1-0 on the season.
River Wright threw a shutout seventh.
Game two saw the Lions get on top with a run in the first and go up 4-0 to eventually win 6-2.
Cory Canterbury had a sacrifice fly in the second, scoring
Alec Alvarez, while
Alex Phillips got it going in the fourth with an RBI double, scoring two.
Fortuna doubled home Balsamo in the fifth and
Mike Million hit a two-run shot in the sixth to provide the cushion.
Million had two hits, a run and two RBIs, while Fortuna, Phillips, and Canterbury drove in a run each.
Seth Mesey started and went six innings, striking out five and walking none to move to 1-0 on the season.
Brennon Covington threw a scoreless seventh.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with a single game at 1 pm.
