Edmond, Okla. – The Missouri Southern baseball team opened up the 2018 season with a big road win as the Lions took out Central Oklahoma, 3-1 in a non-conference matchup today.
Southern (1-0) got a 2-3 day at the plate from
Alec Alvarez with an RBI and a walk.
Johnny Balsamo had two hits and two runs scored, while
Mike Million had a hit and an RBI.
Alex Phillips had a run scored and
Cory Canterbury drove in a run.
On the mound
Joey Reeves went six innings and struck out eight, while walking just two and scattering six hits and one run to pick up the win.
Logan VanWey went an inning with four strikeouts, while
Cam Bednar had two innings and a strikeout.
Central Oklahoma (1-4) had a 3-4 day at the plate from Kyle Miskovsky.
Southern started the scoring with a run in the first when Alvarez singled home Balsamo for a 1-0 lead.
Million had a sacrifice fly to score Balsamo to start the scoring in the third and
Alex Phillips scored after a bases-loaded walk to
Cory Canterbury to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
The Bronchos scored a run in the bottom half of the third on an RBI double from Miskovsky.
From that point on, the Lions' pitching staff held the Bronchos scoreless.
Southern will be back in action on Thursday and Friday with games at Northwestern Oklahoma. The Lions will play two games tomorrow beginning at 3 pm and one game on Friday at 1 pm.
