Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team swept a pair of games today at Warren Turner Field, winning 3-2 on a walk-off in the ninth against Illinois-Springfield and 13-7 in the nightcap over Maryville.
In the opener, Southern (5-2) tied the game at one in the sixth when
Alex Phillips doubled to right center, scoring
Alec Alvarez. After UIS (0-2) went ahead in the top of the eighth, the Lions plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.
Easton Fortuna singled home
Mike Million to tie the game and then
Denver Coffee hit a sacrifice fly to center to score
Jon Leighton with the game-winner.
Corbin Osborn started for the Lions and went six innings, striking out ten and allowing just one run on three hits.
Corey Cowan and
Cam Bednar threw the final three innings, with Bednar picking up the win.
Offensively Phillips had a pair of hits and an RIB in the game, while Alvarez, Million and Leighton scored a run each.
In the second game, Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. The Lions added six in the third, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one each in the seventh and eighth.
The big inning came in the third when Coffee had a two RBI single up the middle and Phillips tripled to center field to clear the bases.
Maryville made it interesting with a four-run ninth, but
River Wright closed it out.
Phillips and Million had three RBIs each in the game with Fortuna going 3-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Coffee drove in two and scored twice, while Leighton and
Johnny Balsamo had two runs scored each.
Jordan Barba had two RBIs and a run scored.
Seth Mesey started and went five innings to get win number two on the season.
Jared Flores and Wright threw the final four innings.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of games at Turner Field. Game one will feature the Lions and Illionis - Springfield at noon with game two following between the Lions and Maryville.
