The Series
This will be the 29th meeting between the RiverHawks and the Lions. NSU leads the overall series 15-13. Southern snapped the longest winning streak at that time of either team when they handed the RiverHawks an 80-77 overtime loss in Tahlequah, Okla. on Jan. 11, 2014. The Lions have now won four in a row over Northeastern State with a 73-55 win in Joplin in the first round of the MIAA Post-Season Tournament last season. The Lions have tied the longest winning streak in the series with four in a row starting on Jan. 11, 2014 (80-77) at Tahlequah. The previous longest winning streak was three in a row and ran from November 18, 2006 through November 28, 2008. Since joining the MIAA NSU is 2-4 against the Lions and 1-3 in Joplin with a 69-45 win on Jan. 26, 2013.

Northeastern State
Randy Gipson is currently in his 18th campaign at the helm of the Northeastern State women's basketball program. He entered the 2016-17 season with a combined 309-184 record as head coach of the RiverHawks. He has recorded 14 winning seasons in his 17 years at NSU, and he has led his program to seven appearances in the NCAA Championship. His NSU women's basketball teams have earned two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances (2004, '10), while advancing to the NCAA Second Round two of the last three seasons (2011-12).
