St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team fell 6-4 today in the first-round of the 2016 MIAA Baseball Tournament to Missouri Western. The Lions will play Northwest Missouri in an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm.
Southern (32-19) scored four runs in the second inning, but went scoreless for the rest of the game.
Chris Hoffman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Tyler Sutherland had a two-run triple and a run scored.
Jacob Bryant had a run and a hit, while
Jesse Rall,
Richie Gorski,
Matt Smith and
Trever Burkdoll had a hit each. Burkdoll scored a run.
Western (35-16) had two hits each from Orencio Fisher and Alex Huering.
The Lions scored four runs in the second inning. Burkdoll started the two-our rally with a single to left and Bryant walked behind him. Hoffman singled home Burkdoll and Sutherland cleared the bases with a triple off the wall in left. He scored on an RBI single from Rall.
The Griffons scored three runs in the third and a run in the fourth to tie it up at four. Western added a pair of runs in the eighth to go ahead and seal the win.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Northwest Missouri in an elimination game. First pitch is slated for 12:30 pm from the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
