Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team set the single-season MSSU record for home runs and
Payton Walker threw seven scoreless as the Lions defeated Lincoln 8-0 in the series finale today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (31-16, 21-15 MIAA) hit its 64th and 65th home run of the season in the game, surpassing the previous school record of 64 set in 2010.
Richie Gorski had both home runs as the third basemen went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Jacob Bryant went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Jesse Rall went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Jackson Cain had a hit and a run scored, while
Chris Hoffman had a pair of walks and two runs scored, but stopped his hitting streak at 18 games. Rall, however, extended his reached base safely streak to 75-straight games.
Walker started and went seven innings, striking out ten and walking just two, while scattering six hits and shutting out the Blue Tigers.
Zach Litchen and
Conner Matson, combined to hold Lincoln hitless over the last two innings.
Lincoln (1-45, 0-36 MIAA) had two hits each from Kaleb Davis and Jake Walker.
The Lions got on board first with an RBI single from Rall, scoring Hoffman. They scored another run in the second on Gorski's first home run. Southern got an unearned run in the fifth and scored two in the sixth on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Sutherland and Rall.
Southern scored two more in the seventh on Gorski's second home run and added another in the eighth on an RBI ground out from Biggs.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend, finishing off the regular season with a three-game series at Northeastern State.
