No. 19 Lions fall 12-11 in extra innings at Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. -- Jesse Rall hit a pair of homers, but the 19th-ranked Lions fell 12-11 today at Missouri S&T at the Ballpark at S&T.

Southern (22-10) got a 3-for-5 game from Rall as the righty hit home runs number 13 and 14 on the season and drove in two, while scoring three times. Jacob Bryant, Richie Gorski, Chris Hoffman and Danny Biggs had two hits each in the game, while Joe Paulino scored twice and walked three times. Gorski, Matt Smith, Hoffman, Hayden Steele, Trever Burkdoll and Biggs all scored a run each, while Bryant, Gorski, Hoffman and Biggs drove in a run each. Steele picked up a triple, while Hoffman picked up double number nine of the year.

Kyle McCulloch started and went seven innings, striking out six and walking one, while allowing just two earned runs. He was saddled with the no-decision. Craig Larkin, Sean Goostree and Austin Aspegren combined for two thirds of an inning, while Trenton Moeller threw the final inning and two thirds, picking up the loss to move to 0-1 on the season.

S&T (19-9) had two hits each from six different batters.

The Lions started the scoring with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Gorski, scoring Paulino. Southern scored five in the fourth and the scoring started with Rall's first home run of the game. Steele tripled home Hoffman, and Biggs singled home Steele for run number three. Paulino scored on a wild pitch and Biggs would score on a passed ball.

Rall's second home run, this time in the fifth, made the score 7-0, but the Miners answered back with four runs in the sixth to cut the lead to three at 7-4.

A three spot for the Lions in the seventh gave Southern a 10-4 lead. Gorski scored an unearned run to start things off and Rall scored on a Hoffman double. Smith scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning. Lucas Swindle.

Again, however, the Miners answered back and S&T scored six runs to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Neither team scored in the ninth and the game went to extras, as the Lions struck first with a run in the tenth. Paulino walked with two outs and Burkdoll pinch-ran. Burkdoll moved to second on a wild pitch and Biggs walked, putting runners at first and second. Bryant then drove in Burkdoll with an RBI single.

The Miners started the bottom of the tenth with a hit batter that scored the tying run on a triple from Lucas Swindle and Swindle would score the winning run on a wild pitch.

The Lions will be back in action this weekend with a three-game MIAA series with Northwest Missouri at home. Friday's game will start at 6 pm with Saturday and Sunday's game to start at 1 pm each day.
